Make Your Case high school
entrepreneurial challenge a big success

MIDDLESEX - After a day of exciting activities and memorable experiences the fifth Middlesex-Oxford-Elgin High School Entrepreneurial Challenge can only be described as a huge success.
The day was designed to give local high school students the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship in an interactive environment that was unique and offered a chance to put theory into practice. Some 40 students from across the three counties took part, and by all accounts everyone had an informative and enjoyable day.
Students were given a case study surrounding At Top of the Hill Kennels, owned and operated in the Thorndale area. All of the participating students developed an action plan for the business throughout the day. They also attended workshops on how to start a small business, where to find customers and how to reach them and finally, where to find the money to make their plan a reality.
According to Cara Finn, Manager of the CFDC of Middlesex County and the co-ordinator of the event “not only did this day give students the opportunity to get inside tips on how to make a small business a success, they also learned the value of working in random teams towards a common goal.” They had a chance to spend a very productive day in a professional environment, network with business mentors from across Middlesex County (their team leaders for the day), and competed to win some fantastic prizes including mini palm-pilot type organizers.
After working in teams throughout the day to develop their own business solutions to the case study, the students then presented their reports to several respected judges who determined the winners. Included in the judging panel, was the co-owner of At Top of the Hill Kennels.
The event was hosted by Community Futures Development Corporation and sponsored by the County of Middlesex, Libro Financial Solutions, Junior Achievement, Youth Opportunities Unlimited, Elgin Middlesex Oxford Training Board, Scrimgeour & Associates, Pizza Hut, GoodLife Fitness, Laidlaw Education Services, Elgin CFDC, Oxford Small Business Support Centre, New Era Graffics and Pure Water Solutions.
